# Ingredient List:

→ Bread & Dairy

01 - 4 slices sourdough or country white bread
02 - 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
03 - 4 slices cheddar or Monterey Jack cheese

→ Meats

04 - 4 slices thick-cut bacon

→ Vegetables

05 - 1 ripe avocado, sliced
06 - 1 medium tomato, sliced
07 - 2 leaves romaine or butter lettuce

→ Condiments & Seasoning

08 - Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste

# Steps:

01 - Cook the bacon in a skillet over medium heat until crispy. Drain on paper towels.
02 - Lightly butter one side of each bread slice.
03 - Place two bread slices, buttered side down, on a clean surface. Layer each with a slice of cheese, bacon, lettuce, tomato, and avocado. Season avocado and tomato with salt and pepper. Top with the remaining cheese slices, then the remaining bread, buttered side up.
04 - Heat a large nonstick skillet or griddle over medium-low heat. Place sandwiches in the skillet and cook until golden brown and cheese is melted, approximately 3 to 4 minutes per side, pressing gently with a spatula.
05 - Remove from skillet, let cool for 1 to 2 minutes, slice in half, and serve immediately.

# Expert Advice:

01 -
  • It combines the best parts of a BLT and grilled cheese without making you pick a favorite.
  • Everything cooks in about twenty minutes, so it works for lunch or a lazy dinner.
  • The avocado adds a richness that makes each bite feel more indulgent than it has any right to be.
  • You can customize it endlessly and still get that perfect crispy, melty result every time.
02 -
  • If your heat is too high the bread will burn before the cheese melts, so keep it on medium low and be patient.
  • Layer the cheese directly against the bread on both sides so it acts like glue and holds everything together when you flip it.
  • Don't overload the avocado or the sandwich will slide apart when you try to eat it.
03 -
  • Press down gently with your spatula while grilling to help the layers meld together without squashing out all the fillings.
  • Let the butter come to room temperature before spreading it, cold butter will tear your bread and leave uneven patches.
  • Slice the tomato thin so it doesn't make the sandwich too wet or cause everything to slip around.
